This rite is used when an oath made to a spirit, deity, or other power has been fulfilled. To begin, prepare a space with a candle, a bowl of clean water or wine, and a token that represents the oath (such as a cord, paper, or charm related to the vow). Have on hand a bit of salt and an iron tool (such as a nail or blade). Light the candle and place the token before you.

Take a breath, ready yourself and say:

I stand between the worlds once more,
Where vow was made and oath I bore.
What I have pledged, I now lay downβ€”
My task complete, my hand unbound.

Touch the token with iron, then place it into the bowl. If it is safe to do so, submerge it or gently tear it to signify the release. Say:

By iron’s edge, by water’s grace,
I close this vow and clear the space.
The bond fulfilled, the duty doneβ€”
I walk now free, my will as one.

Sprinkle a pinch of salt into the bowl and stir it clockwise three times, then hold your hand over the water or wine and speak:

May what is ended be at peace,
Let no thread linger, naught but ease.
I thank the powers, spirits true,
Who walked beside me, saw me through.

Pour out the water or wine onto the earth or leave it on your altar as an offering. Then, hold the iron tool and trace a circle in the air or on the ground, saying:

By salt, by steel, by word and rite,
I claim my path, my craft, my light.
This oath is closed, its chapter sealedβ€”
With breath and will, my fate revealed.

Blow out the candle and leave the rite when you are ready.
