This ritual is used to sever unwanted spirit attachments or influence from a person and to banish the spirit from the person's life. You will need: a candle; a length of thread, twine, or cord; a bit of iron; a small bowl of salt water or protective herbs steeped in water; and a mirror or reflective surface (for distant work, a photo of the person may also be used).

Working for Yourself or for Another In-Person

Light the candle. Place the mirror or reflective surface before you or the person receiving the rite. Place the bowl of water nearby. Loop the thread or cord loosely around your wrist (or theirs), allowing it to rest there while you say:

What clings unbidden, I now unbind.

From what would be hidden, I come unblind.

What walks beside, without consent,

Is loosed and lost, its grip unmeant.

Not mine, not yoursβ€”this tie I sever.

Be gone from now, and gone forever.

Pass the iron tool through the loop of cord and cut it or pull the loop free, saying:

By edge of steel and will of flame,

I call back power, I name my name.

This bond is broken, root and threadβ€”

No shadow clings, no voice is fed.

Dip your fingers into the water and flick it over your shoulders (or over the person's head and shoulders). Say:

Washed in ward and guarded light,

I close the gate and seal it tight.

Spirit once near, this place you fleeβ€”

No more in flesh, no more in me.

Hold the mirror up to reflect the flame of the candle and say:

Let light reveal, let shadow fall,

Let none remain to heed this call.

Go now, spirit, by my breathβ€”

I banish thee to silence, death[1].

Extinguish the candle. Bury or burn the cord. Pour the water out onto bare earth or at a crossroads.

Working for Another Long-Distance

Β·        Use a taglock (such as a photo, name written on paper, or personal item if available). Rest the mirror or photo before the candle.

Β·        Wrap the thread around the taglock or place it in a small dish with the cord coiled around it.

Β·        Say the incantation as above, holding the iron tool in your hand and imagining the person whole, cleansed, and free of the spirit.

Β·        When cutting the cord, do so over the image or name, saying the same words. Flick salt water lightly over the taglock. Speak the cleansing and banishing verses as if they were present.

Β·        Once done, dispose of the thread and water as above. You may choose to inform the person the rite is complete and advise they take a cleansing bath or do supportive work.

[1] β€œDeath” here symbolically refers to the ending of the tie, not literal destruction.
