To Say Goodbye to the Land Spirits when Moving
This rite is intended to release and thank the spirits of the land when moving away from a place. It marks the end of your relationship, affirms your gratitude, and severs spiritual ties so that both you and the spirits may move forward in peace. Set up your space with: a small libation (milk, wine, cider, or clear water); a bit of bread or honey; a pinch of salt; and a small iron item that has lived in the area with you.
Go to a quiet place on the land you are leavingβsomewhere you have worked magic, walked often, or felt a connection: under a tree, beside a stone, near a stream, or at the edge of your garden. Place your offerings on the earth. Touch the soil or the base of a tree and say:
Spirits of root and stone and dew,
I come with thanks and parting true.
You walked with me, in sun and storm,
In leaf and thorn, in field and form.
I fed your earth, I trod your way,
And now I goβI cannot stay.
No harm I send, no gate I bind,
But leave with reverence, heart, and mind.
Pour out the libation and break the bread or place the honey on the ground. Then touch the iron to the soil and say:
This iron grounds what once was shared,
To mark the end for those who cared.
The charm is loosed, the bond undone,
No further claim beneath the sun.
Pause and speak from the heartβshare what this land meant to you, what you are grateful for, what you release. Then say:
Spirits kind, go as you willβ
Abide, withdraw, or wander still.
Your path is yours, your power whole,
But I, by will, now close this role.
No call shall pass from me to thee,
Our time is doneβso it must be.
Sprinkle the pinch of salt onto the offerings, and say:
By salt, by stone, by root and flame,
I leave this land in peace and name.
By will and way, this rite is doneβ
Go now in peace, O land and sun.
Leave the iron behind, buried or hidden in a respectful place, to symbolize your released presence. Then, walk away without looking back.
